Technology Should Never Replace Nature in Our Lives

Technology Should Never Replace Nature in Our Lives

As we head into the holiday weekend, I am boarding Delta flight 1927 from chilly Detroit to sunny Sarasota with my wife and kids. I sit down next to my boys Hunter and River and my wife Nadine sits with Fischer.

Before I finish stuffing the coats into the overhead compartment, Hunter and River both belt out, “Dad, where are the iPads?” I roll my eyes and hand them the tablets.

Looks like I’m using my laptop on this flight, I think to myself, oh well, so much for Zero Dark Thirty. As I look down at my iPhone, I say to myself, Yikes, we have become total tech toy addicts!

Now don’t get me wrong, as the founder of Outdoor Hub, the world’s leading outdoor media company online, I have nothing against technology–in fact I love it! However, as awesome as technology is, it should never replace or destroy our attachment to nature. It is within nature that we can slow down and take a moment of calm, a moment of presence. How many of us do not need a little more presence in our lives? Being outdoors has a way of restoring our soul.

I love nature and I immerse my kids in it every chance I get. My family knows what nature does to restore my soul, they see how excited I become and how aware I am when I am in nature. In this ADD-crazed partial-attention society we live in, they get to see their dad in his element. They can sense how present I am there with them, unlike too many times where I am sneaking looks at my iPhone before I put them to bed, or as I am watching a tee ball practice. I wish I could say I’m not guilty of these things, but I am, and that is more the reason why I hit the woods, or a lake, or a field with them for a relaxing walk every chance I get.

My action item for you this holiday weekend is to take some time with your family or whomever you are with and get your butts outdoors. Take a few minutes to sit by a big tree, stroll through the woods, or sit somewhere and gaze at a pretty view, a park perhaps. Leave the phones, the tablets, the laptops, and any other gadgets and be one with nature. When we take to Mother Nature in this way she has a way of providing us the ultimate return on investment by raising our state of presence and recharging our batteries, it’s just plain good for the soul!

Much love, and have an awesome holiday all! If you’ve got one to share, tell me a story about how checking into nature recharged your batteries.

Are You Awake and Aware Like the Super Predator You Want to Be?

Are You Awake and Aware Like the Super Predator You Want to Be?

Last week we focused on a message of changing it up and how when we change habits as simple as the route you take to work or the restaurant you eat at, you are actually changing your perception and opening up yourself to think and process differently. Together we are working towards developing that true hunter mentality and the ability to think and conquer prey like a true hunter. Changing it up is a great first step in that direction. Thanks for all the awesome comments!

This week we are approaching the subject of awareness and how to raise your awareness. The true hunter is highly aware of the environment they are in. Part of becoming a super predator that hunts down the prey it seeks is to dial in our awareness.

The true hunter is able to retain multiple levels of data in real-time in an effort to be more present and to become a better hunter. This happens largely because of a conscious awareness that you bring to life in almost every situation.

In my video, I break down how we can consciously make these changes towards developing the true hunter’s awareness so check it out.

Please play the video to learn how to do this instantly and move further down our path of becoming a true hunter! And yes ladies this works every bit as well for you as the guys so play this video and get on the hunt with us as well!

In the comments below or on Facebook and Twitter, share with me the ways that you will put these awareness tips into practice. Remember, the most aware hunter is often the best hunter! Happy hunting…

We Are All Hunters

We Are All Hunters

How much of your time is wasted focused on emotion, focused on ego and not on the desired outcome? I totally get it, I’ve spent too much of my life there–stuck in the waiting game, the incomplete game. I could not set clear desired outcomes as the clouds were abundant and the lens which I saw through had lost its hunter’s edge. Despite trying hard, I never seemed to get that which I truly wanted and then I figured out one day that it was me that was blocking greatness, me and nobody else.

I discovered that when we tap the hunter inside of us–our natural order–things become clearer. All that we need for business, life, or the field is already there. We just have to see it, believe it, and stay out of the way and let the hunter take over. The true hunter knows its purpose and does not get caught in the noise, the ego, or the waiting game.

We are all hunters, whether we are hunting an antique, chasing a huge business deal, or trying to take a dall sheep at 10,000 feet. The sooner we start to realize that we must become hunters in our business lives, in our personal lives, and in the way we pursue our goals or our desired outcomes, the sooner we shall live a life of deliberate purpose: a life of successful hunts.

The time has come to unleash the hunter and track down that which has previously eluded you. All that is needed to be leveraged is inside of you, so wake up because the world is waiting, hunter, and it’s open season…

How would you change it up? How will you unleash your inner hunter?

Killing the Competition: Are You a Rooster or a Bat?

Killing the Competition: Are You a Rooster or a Bat?

For several years I have believed that each of us has a peak activity window of 3 hours per day. When we focus all in on these 3 peak activity hours we work ten times more effectively than any other time of the day. There are two peak activity window types; you are either the Rooster or the Bat. The rooster is an early AM person; the bat is a late night person. By attacking this peak activity window I am gaining a 30 hour daily advantage on the competition, and so should you!

Watch my video to help you leverage my system and KILL THE COMPETITION!

Are you a Rooster or a Bat? Let me know!

Nature and the Pursuit of Life: The King, the Love–it’s All about the Love

FarbmanBlogElvis-590x312

Special thank you to Sohpie Erlich for this beautiful song in the video.

It’s a cold November morning and gun season is about to begin and soon I will have to hang up my bow. I know this feeling all too well. I climb up the tree and begin to unstrap my stand, which needs to be relocated. I freeze at the top foot pegs and enter a zone and deep thoughts come to me. I decide to climb into my stand and sit down to reflect.

“Elvis has been eluding me,” I think to myself. I had him patterned, but my strategy has stopped producing peeks at his unmistakable and unforgettable antlers. He truly is magnificent. He truly is the King! It has been an incredible season chasing him. I have learned so much about this one-of-a-kind King of the Woods. I have become obsessed with this animal, in love with him I suppose, but he is the King after all. Each of the three times I spotted him I shook harder, with the endorphin rush growing, and somehow Elvis was able to pull me into his state of mind, into his being. It is as if he is controlling me in a way. I know it sounds crazy, but this deer and I communicate somewhere, connected in our sixth senses. Somewhere in this vulnerable state with this animal there is a deep love, a passionate chase, a feeling of great happiness.

Looking up into the sky, I smile as I think about the time I spent last spring looking for his antler sheds with my lifelong hunting companion Jay Livingston. Finding a shed antler from Elvis is akin to finding Easter candy–except amplified into infinity. It is so perfect to smell the springtime dampness on the ground, with the wildlife singing again as all has been undisturbed for a while and the vanishing winter has animals up and moving. Warmer days are ahead and I love my time with Jay searching for the King’s late winter shed drops, it feels like its own opening day in a sense. I’m cracking up as I remember Jay finding an Elvis shed and how together we belted out the melody of “The Final Countdown” (the Detroit Pistons’ championship song!), such love baby. “Donnnananadonadadada” over and over, dancing in the woods laughing and celebrating you Elvis, you incredible buck. Man, I have loved having you in my life, Elvis.

Snapping out of my “tree stand dream,” I unhook, slide off, and detach the stand, ease it down to the ground and head off to move it in an attempt to get another look at Elvis and maybe, just maybe get a shot…

Nine years later, sitting in my office today I have a couple of cool ideas about what I might blog about this week and then in a stream of consciousness I start writing about LOVE and how big of a factor LOVE is for me in life. I simply thought about a time in nature when my LOVE was on fire and the words started flowing. Come to think of it, I guess that I always make it a point to have an “Elvis” in my life. It might be a business deal, it might be a monster buck, it might be a Greenfield Village visit with my kids, but I like life with Elvis in it, yes I am a believer that Elvis is alive and well.

I still feel the butterflies from Elvis as I write, it is as if I am there in the moment, yet these memories are nearly a decade old. I now realize that this sixth sense connection was actually me out of body or in a state of consciousness for the first time and it overwhelmed me, today this feels more normal. Living with this state of consciousness above it all is where I am trying to live all of the time today, and sometimes it really works. In this state, I am operating out of love not out of fear. That said I suppose it is largely about the life pursuit for our own personal Elvis that helps fuel passion, dedication, and an approach that is full of love. Eventually you will reach a place of out of body consciousness, but love is clearly a catalyst to this state of being. Love is a choice, and it’s a damn good one–a lot more fulfilling than fear and it fuels everything!

My advice to you is to consider pursuing an Elvis in your life, something you fully immerse yourself into where passion and LOVE are “KING”. A key to fulfillment in life is NOT simply having goals and accomplishing them. If all we ever do in life is check boxes, then what the hell did we really accomplish? Was it even meaningful, was it even fun? Is there any LOVE in that? No, I believe you have to be in something, you have to be committed to it, you got to have to have the LOVE, baby. It is within this loving pursuit that we grow as human beings and at the soul level.

Elvis lives…

Unleash the Authentic Hunter

Unleash The Authentic Hunter

Whether or not we hunt animals, we are all hunters and inside of each and every one of us lies that which I call our “authentic hunter.” Do you know the authentic hunter that lives inside of you? Within it lies the key to our greatness.

After interviewing so many amazing people for my upcoming book, people in and out of the outdoor industry, I have confirmed my theory that authenticity is almost always a key driving force behind success in life.

Too often we associate the meaning of authenticity with a “big personality,” but that’s not always correct. Authenticity is our natural best self being leveraged, regardless of what that may look like, as we are all unique. At one end of the scale you might find a Lee Lakosky or a Toxey Haas: confident, visionary, yet understated. On the other end, you’ll find a Mark Zona or a Nick Mundt with comical tendencies and extreme comfort in front of the camera. While very different, both styles thrive through their authentic hunter and both styles put meat in the freezer.

As hunters we each have our own style, our own schtick. The key lies within finding our most authentic hunter, which is our legit electromagnetic signature on the world. How often when pursuing goals do you tap into and live through your authentic hunter? I don’t care if you are hunting a business deal, a big relationship, a collectible item, or a grizzly bear, these are all hunts in life. Find the authentic hunter, live within it, and the rest will work itself out–you will take down that which you are after.

Our highest and best self is our authentic hunter. The authentic hunter knows its purpose, and that is to conquer its prey. Too often in life we are not our authentic hunter, therefore we come up short on our goals. Authenticity is much like momentum in that you can’t fake it, or it’s obvious to others and therefore it is ineffective. Perhaps more importantly, it is obvious to you.

Do not make apologies for your authentic hunter, we all have our own brand, and when we live inside of it we will attract flow like never before. The law of attraction begins to kick in when we live all of our lives within the authentic hunter–we become deliberate and purposeful.

The next time you feel like you are not getting what you want out of life, take close notice to the way you are living, the way you are hunting. Are you playing the game leveraging your authentic hunter and blending into each situation with your own authentic style, or are you unnaturally conforming or even fighting the moment? The best hunter knows how to adapt to their environment using their natural order with nothing fake about it. In life we will be thrown into a wide variety of situations, and face many challenges, when we hunt with authenticity we will find success more often than not. So f*#k fake, unleash the authentic hunter and watch the world come to you…
